Post Op Information

Orthopedic Innovations-Dr. Tilgner

Post Operative Instruction Sheet

Shoulder Surgery

  1. Call the office for your post-operative appointment if you did not schedule one at your pre-op appointment with Margaret or Summer. You will need to be seen within 10-14 days after surgery. Please call upon discharge in case we are booked out. 928-854-3333 (Please specify Havasu or Parker office)

  2. Keep your dressing on until follow up. Do not remove the dressing. We will remove the dressing at your first visit as well as your suture or staples. Sponge bath only for that first 10-14 days.

  3. Your sling should be worn 24 hours a day. This should be worn under all clothing (bra, t-shirt etc.), not over the clothing. The arm should be bent at a 90-degree angle and not moved. Moving the arm in this crucial time period can result in undoing what was done in surgery.

  4. Using a maxi pad under the armpit helps with absorption.

  5. Physical therapy will be initiated after your first post-operative visit. All shoulder surgeries will need physical therapy.

  6. Any surgical findings you would like to know will also be covered in this first visit. Please write down any questions so we can answer them for you.

  7. Please call the office or report to the emergency room immediately if any of the following should occur: numbness and/or tingling in the operative extremity or a sudden increase in pain.

  8. Swelling is normal after surgery and is well controlled with ice and elevation. Swelling causes pain…..if your swelling is well controlled, your pain will be decreased. Swelling in the hand is common in this type of surgery, applying ice to the hand raising the hand up slightly while keeping it against your chest will help with reducing swelling.
